Guided by the broader landscape of China-LAC cooperation and attuned to global development trends and key dynamics across the Americas, our institute is dedicated to fulfilling its core functions of in-depth research and high-quality decision support. Our primary responsibilities include:
Continuous monitoring and intelligence gathering: We maintain ongoing, systematic tracking of global political, economic, and social trends. This includes establishing a comprehensive and regular monitoring mechanism that pays close attention to development trajectories, policy directions, and structural shifts in North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Through this process, we accurately identify emerging hotspots, key inflection points, and potential variables that may shape regional trajectories.
In-depth strategic analysis: We conduct thorough examinations of major external factors—including international policy shifts, updates to multilateral and bilateral trade agreements, and evolving geopolitical risks. We systematically evaluate their medium- and long-term implications for China-LAC bilateral relations and the progress of practical cooperation, clearly mapping impact pathways, distinguishing between opportunities and challenges, and delivering focused, evidence-based analytical conclusions.
High-quality research outputs: Leveraging our professional research expertise and focusing on the above priorities, we produce authoritative research reports, special policy briefs, in-depth analytical commentaries, and other high-value deliverables. These outputs present clear research findings, sound trend assessments, and objective insights, providing reliable and actionable decision-making references for government departments, partner institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.
Forward-looking policy recommendations: Building on rigorous research and analysis, and aligned with the actual needs and strategic objectives of China-LAC cooperation, we formulate forward-looking, practical, and implementable strategic proposals and risk-response plans. These recommendations help anticipate and mitigate cooperation risks, refine cooperation approaches, enhance overall efficiency, and support the steady, healthy, and sustainable development of China-LAC relations—ultimately contributing to the high-quality advancement of bilateral cooperation.
To actively respond to the Belt and Road Initiative and the guiding spirit of the China-CELAC Forum, and to effectively implement the comprehensive China-Latin America and the Caribbean (hereinafter referred to as "China-LAC") cooperation framework under the Belt and Road umbrella, the Institute for China-LAC Strategic Studies (IECL) was officially established and registered in 2016.
Headquartered in Shanghai—China's premier hub for economy, finance, and global opening-up—the Institute seeks to deepen strategic alignment and practical integration between China and the LAC region in key areas such as infrastructure development, scientific and technological innovation, economic and trade cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
